Locksmith in Audubon Park

Shepherdsville was originally called “Bullitt’s Lick” by the Europeans because of the salt licks found by Captain Thomas Bullitt in 1773. The first commercial salt works in Kentucky were opened here; they were closed in the 1830s for competition with the Kanawha River works in Virginia (now West Virginia). Shepherdsville grew up around Shepherd’s mill and store, which were established at the head of Salt River by Adam Shepherd. In 1793, the village was incorporated and it became a county seat of Bullitt County when it reached its final boundaries in 1796.

The first post office didn’t get started until 1806, but the town was settled even before Kentucky became a state. When Doctor John Shepherd moved to Bullitt Lick, the little settlement that would become the county seat of Bullitt County was already in place.

In 1836, a mineral water spa called Paroquet Springs opened. Then as now, Shepherdsville was at the center of Bullitt County and Paroquet Springs was at the center of Shepherdsville. The little town on the Salt River had a gristmill by the 1790s and a stagecoach road connecting it to Bardstown that predated the War of 1812. The mineral water spa commercialized a hot spring that came out of a rock-cut when the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was put through in the mid-1850s.

As a frontier salt boiling and river passing place, Shepherdsville was once one of the biggest towns in Kentucky. In the Civil War, Shepherdsville’s bridge was one of the most critical targets for sabotage for both sides and was guarded by Union troops. The Paroquet Springs hotel burned down in 1879 and water was bottled for sale until 1915.

Marie Thompson’s lynching in Shepherdsville took place in 1904, near the jail just outside Lebanon Junction. In the Shepherdsville train wreck in late December 1917, around fifty people were killed in a two-train collision, the deadliest train wreck in Kentucky history. Until well into the 20th century, Shepherdsville’s economy was based on agriculture. It was a county trading center, important for law and justice in connection with the county seat. Construction of the Kentucky turnpike (now I-65) in the 1950s stimulated suburban residential development, as Louisville-bound working people could more easily and speedily commute to work. Many went to Shepherdsville and elsewhere in a new house.
