Middletown became a city in 1797, being incorporated by the Jefferson County Court on 500 acres of land lying on a branch of the forks of Beargrass Creek. The original allotment originally belonged to Jacob Meyers and Culberth Harrison. There is no recorded explanation why the city was designated Middletown, but it is generally accepted that that name was chosen because the town was in the “middle” of the two older cities of Louisville which was founded June 24, 1778, and Shelbyville, which was incorporated December 20, 1792. In 1871 the Kentucky General Assembly modified the original charter and increased Middletown’s boundaries.
Because Middletown hasn’t had an election or collecting of taxes since 1919, Circuit Judge McCauley Smith disbanded the city’s charter on July 26, 1960, and Middletown lost its government status that was 163 years old. With a commission government form, the sixth-class city was restored with a city charter on August 7, 1976. On July 15, 1982, the city status was promoted to a fourth-class city.
