In the mid-19th century, a few French and German Catholics lived in the area, but not very many. The first church was St. Andrew’s Church, which was built in 1851, and even though it is no longer standing, a main local road is named after it. The Paducah and Louisville Railway – now a short line – laid a station in the area in 1874, and Paine Hotel, a hotel and summer resort that grew around the shaded ridge on Muldraugh Hill known as “Pleasure Ridge,” also went up around this time. Pleasure Ridge Park (the name of the first post office, founded in 1876) was best known for Pleasure Ridge Park’s Hotel, an elegant summer resort that lasted into the 1900s and boasted a carousel. The area remained a popular post for tourists into World War I.
During the 1950s, the area began to expand as subdivisions were constructed. People moving to the community liked the relatively low cost of land and proximity to both Downtown Louisville and Fort Knox. In 1984, residents successfully fought off an attempt by the neighboring city of Shively to take over Pleasure Ridge Park.
The Little League World Series was won in 2002 by a team from Pleasure Ridge Park.
