Locksmith in Audubon Park

Hurstbourne’s land was part of a military grant to Henry Harrison, surveyed by John Floyd in 1774. Maj. William Linn, arriving in 1779, was the first permanent settler; his Linn’s Station ( a stockaded fort) was on Beargrass Creek, probably on the east side of present-day Hurstbourne Parkway and then a part of the road from the Falls of the Ohio to Fort Harrod. On their way to Linn’s Station from Squire Boone’s Station in 1781, the victims of the Long Run Massacre were attacked by Indians and British soldiers. Seeking clear title to the land, the heirs of Maj. Linn abandoned the site in the 1790s.

But in 1789, Colonel Richard Anderson purchased a 500-acre (2.0 km2) tract of land in the area and established his estate, which he called “Soldier’s Retreat”. His house was damaged in the 1811 earthquake, struck by lightning, and finally demolished in the 1840s. By 1842, the property was owned by John Jeremiah Jacob, who then built Lyndon Hall, now part of the Hurstbourne Country Club clubhouse.

The Hert family bought the property in 1915 and renamed it “Hurstbourne.” The “Hurstbourne Parkway” was actually created in 1935 when an existing lane was widened. “Highbaugh Farms” became the property’s name by 1965 and commercial development began with residential development soon to follow once Louisville substantially expanded in the 1970s. In 1982 it was incorporated as a city to avoid being annexed by Louisville. By 1990 almost all the available land within the city’s limits had been developed.

Development in the 1970s, however, rediscovered the Anderson house ruins, which were excavated and rebuilt by local developer Leroy Highbaugh Jr. He moved his family into the rebuilt Soldier’s Retreat house, in 1983 and it has become a known spot locally.
