We Are The Best Locksmith in Barbourmeade
Today, Barbourmeade is a piece of what was once known by the somewhat informal moniker of Springdale, for the farm that sat on the south side of Brownsboro Road starting in 1830. Although it is not a fully recognized neighborhood or district in the city of Louisville (and doesn’t have definite boundaries), the older businesses in the community still carry the Springdale moniker.
The middle of the community used to be the entrance drive to the Barbour house, which sat on the 500-acre Barbour family tract of land between Brownsboro Road and River Road. The original Barbour house was destroyed in the 1974 tornado, which ended near Barbour Lane.
As early as 1879, a grocery, gristmill and blacksmith shop occupied the intersection of present-day Barbour Lane and Brownsboro Road alongside a tavern called the Seven Mile House for its distance from downtown Louisville. Today, a convenience store and gas station anchor this intersection that boasts a dry cleaner, automotive service and repair, and animal hospital. It was the development of these facilities that first put a spotlight on this intersection as the unofficial center of the Peytona community.
Starting in 1978, a string of liquor stores cropped up at the junction. Despite much opposition from locals, one settled in, but not without a fight. Springdale Presbyterian Church was chartered in 1882 and updated in 1964 when much of the current structure was built.
From the 1880s until the 1950s, what’s now Barbourmeade and neighboring parts of Louisville’s East End were mostly covered in potato farms. Locals helped organize the St. Matthews Produce Exchange, based in St. Matthews, which was known by locals as “the potato capital of the world.” The Produce Exchange was the second-largest shipper of potatoes in America.
One of these was John “The Potato King” Stutzenberger Sr., “one of Jefferson County’s best-known farmers,” and whose family farm was on a large portion of the land now known as Barbourmeade. In 1941 the area was referred to as having “Jefferson County’s most fertile land and least experienced farmers,” as it hosted wealthy hobby farmers who moved out from the city.
Barbourmeade’s few remaining pre-World War II buildings include a farmhouse built by the Schneider family, who eventually operated a truck farm there. The farm faced Brownsboro Road. After World War II, potato production in Southwest Louisville counties declined. There are few remaining farms. Some acreages in Springdale and along Brownsboro Road were sold off, reduced in size and built on.
As 1952 came to a close, Stutzenberger belittled the nation’s faltering consumption in “diet propaganda.” Joe Wilhoyte, a developer from Oldham County, had bought a 45-acre tract at the end of Brownsboro Road and Barbour Lane from Albert D. Stutzenberger and his sister Anna Hahn, two of the children of John Stutzenberger Sr. Al Stutzenberger, as his friends called him, was an amateur farmer, languages and music instructor at the Kentucky Military Institute, and an expert on collecting souvenir spoons.
