In 1793, this county was established. They named it for Colonel John Hardin, a local Indian fighter who worked closely with tribes in the area. In a few years, professional men and tradesmen came to live in the community. In 1793, Colonel Andrew Hynes had 30 acres (12 ha) (that was already known as the “Severn’s Valley Settlement”) surveyed and laid off into lots and streets to establish Elizabethtown. Named in honor of his wife, Elizabethtown was legally established in 1797.

At Haycraft’s mill on Valley Creek, Thomas Lincoln aided Samuel Haycraft with the construction of a millrace. In 1806, after Lincoln and Nancy Hanks were wed, they lived in Elizabethtown in a log cabin that Lincoln made. Their daughter, Sarah, was born there in 1807. Soon after, they departed for the Sinking Spring Farm, where Abraham Lincoln came into the world in 1809. Lincoln took his family to Indiana in 1816. He journeyed once more to Elizabethtown after his wife died in 1818, and in 1819, he wed Sarah Bush Johnston, whose husband had died in 1816, the same year as Nancy Lincoln. Sarah Bush Johnston and her three children journeyed from Elizabethtown with him to Indiana, where she became step-mother to Thomas Lincoln’s children.

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company constructed a rail line to Elizabethtown in 1858, and Captain Thomas Helm’s grandson, John L. Helm, became its president in 1852. With Helm’s guidance, the L&N’s main stem for its Nashville Line was constructed through Elizabethtown. Elizabethtown prospered as a trade center along the rail line, as well as a vital strategic point during the Civil War. The L&N’s charter by the Commonwealth of Kentucky was dated March 5, 1850. It authorized the L&N to raise funds and construct a railroad from the Tennessee state line in the direction of Nashville to Louisville. John L. Helm became the president of the L&N in October 1854. The first train arrived in Elizabethtown on June 15, 1858, completing the rail line to there.
