Locksmith in Audubon Park

Situated at what once constituted the intersection of two stagecoach lines, Mount Washington was first known as The Cross Roads. It was chartered as Mount Vernon in 1822 in reference to the Virginia home of President George Washington. However, the name could not be used because another post office only 30 miles away in Knox County had priority. By that time, the population had risen to about 700 and there were three churches, two schools, six stores and groceries, five doctors, two taverns, and twelve mechanical crafts. When the community was incorporated as a city—for the first time—in 1833, its name was changed to Mount Washington in honor of the nation’s first president.

By the 1850s, Mount Washington had become Bullitt County’s economic center. In the autumn of 1862, it was occupied by John Wharton’s Confederate cavalry during the Civil War. A skirmish occurred on October 1 with Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Crittenden’s men lay north of Mount Washington along Floyds Fork. Confederates retreated following a defeat on the next day.

During the 1800s, a small two-room schoolhouse stood at the south end of Bardstown Road (Highway 31E). In 1916, a new building consisting of four classrooms was built. Where the four-room classroom building once stood is now Mt. Washington Middle School. In the early 1940s, that building was built as a high school. Mt. Washington Middle had to expand and remodel in 1995 because the population was growing so rapidly, and now supports more than 200 classrooms and offices. Since then, another middle school had to be built on the other side of town. That project was finished in 2006.

In the 1930s the industries of Mt. Washington began to age, causing it to lose its top town status in the county. On November 18, 1940 fire burned the heart of the business district and the decline continued. The new influx of residents for Mt. Washington began in the late 1960s with the opening of General Electric’s Appliance Park nearby in Louisville. When the 1970 census was taken Mt. Washington’s population was 2,020. In the 2010 census, the population had surged to over 9,000. Although the Appliance Park went through a downturn, ultimately leading to General Electric’s appliance division being sold to Haier; Mt. Washington continues as a commuter town of Louisville.
