Jeffersontown area was inhabited by consecutive cultures of Native Americans before European exploration. They utilized the area for its wealthy natural resources by hunting mainly bison herds. The bison created tracks through the forests and prairies of their seasonal migrations that were later used by Native Americans. Also, used by Europeans and Americans.
Situated in the southeastern part of Jefferson County on Kentucky’s north-central border, Jeffersontown was originally established as a rest and market stop for first settlers visiting the Falls of the Ohio at Louisville, in the late 1700s. Farmers began developing the fertile soil, watched over by Thomas Bullitt, who surveyed the land in 1773, and John Floyd the next year. Settled by the Hites, Tylers, and Oldhams, who received the tract under land grants to veterans of the military for service during the American Revolutionary War, as the new government was without cash.
Abraham Bruner bought 122 acres of land in 1794. In May 1797, he petitioned with the Jefferson County Fiscal Court to have a 40-acre section of his land incorporated as Jefferson City – named for either the county or for Thomas Jefferson, then the vice president of the United States. It was called Bruner’s Town or Brunerstown, long, by its residents; but Jefferson Town began to be used and it eventually became adopted as its name.
The Tyler Settlement Rural Historic District is a large 600-acre tract of land preserved since the latter part of the 20th century representing landholding from the pioneer period. Significantly agricultural, the area, situated east of Jeffersontown includes several of the Tylers’ original log cabins and a variety of barns. Much of the Tyler settlement is referred to as Blackacre Nature Preserve. This 170-acre tract is used by the Jefferson County Public Schools as part of their environmental education offering.
